The Story
We start off with the events at the End of Teen Titans #5 being told from Superboy's perspective. There are a couple of differences with the words that are spoken that still get the jist of things down. The one big difference is the lack of smugness on Superboy's face that he had over in Teen Titans #5. It takes the scene and makes it seem totally different than it was in Teen Titans. That tells you how much of a difference an artist makes.
We get to see that Superboy's costume has some sort of self repair going for it. That will help keep down the bills for paying for a new costume. Hmm...why wasn't this brought up before after previous fights?
Then we meet Supergirl. Supergirl is only speaking in Kryptonian which Superboy doesn't understnad. Then Supergirl touches Superboy and it instills Superboy with memories of Krypton and a sudden ability to speak Kryptonian. Then Superboy mentions he is a half-human clone and that sets Supergirl off. Apparently clones weren't help in high regard on Krypton. They were called Kon-El. They were eventually become mindless killing machines. They started a war on Krypton that ravaged the planet and, from what is written, played a part in Krypton being destroyed. Of course, our two heroes have to fight before this is revealed, because that is what happens in any superhero book where two heroes first meet up. Sigh.
You know, I've read all of two issues of Supergirl. From the two issues, I really didn't see any character growth. her appearance in this comic is exactly how she is in Supergirl #2, and that worries me. Is all she ever going to do is fly around in some weird bikini looking costume speaking Kryptonian and punching every person with an S shield that she finds?
Her appearance does bring us the first time that Superboy has learned something from his interactions with people. He genuinely tries to reach out to her in somewhat of a normal conversation instead of just being rude to her.
Superboy then decides that he is heading to N.O.W.H.E.R.E.'s base to talk with Templar about what is going on. Why Templar? Because apparently he is supposed to be the leader of N.O.W.H.E.R.E. this issue. I am sure by next issue it will be someone else who randomly comes in.
We end with Superboy ripping the door off the base and Rose Wilson on the other side waiting to attack him. Why is she intent on killing him? How did she know to wait by the door? I could care less.
The solicitation is way off from the story, Superboy never mentions a word about Superman or trying to find him. He's just hanging out on top of a bridge when Supergirl comes flying by wondering why he has an S-shield. And he's not left wondering why his own people don't like him - Supergirl told him that he will turn into a mindless killing machine. I think that is the opposite of left wondering.
The Art
Lackluster. Nothing exciting. The first impression of seeing a new art style has worn away. Now this just seems to be dull with nothing new from issue to issue. Its a good, consistent style, and it shows how a different artist's take on the same scene from a different comic can be taken very differently. You can tell that Superboy is starting to loosen up with his facial expressions. If the story would be more impressive, then maybe this art could go in a direction that is more interesting to me, but its just lacking right now.
The Cover
Reflective of what happens in the comic, but nothing that really jumps out at me. Again we have a different artist on the covers that is nowhere near the interior art's style. It's just not meshing with me.
Grades
Words: 4/10 - meh.
Pictures: 4/10 - meh
Recommend: Negative. If this is your first time reading about Supergirl then you are left with a ton of questions about her. Pretty much the same as every other character that is introduced in each issue. More questions that answers.
Buy Next Issue: I'm out. I gave it six issues and then when it started tying into Teen Titans it just fell flat for me. Its like we are dealing with two completely different characters between the two books and I find the one in Teen Titans more interesting.
