Why I Bought It
Oh, is that a new artist for the main Turtle series? Nah, that's not why I bought it. It's the Turtles, why would I not be buying it?
What I Liked
The story seems to be going forward strong. There was a bit of a slowness at first as a way to show stress relief for the Turtles after they had their first big fight with Shredder. Then Casey comes crashing in from his own micro-series story.
I'm liking this Karai character. Her back story gets fleshed out a little more as she catches everyone up with what she has been doing to bring the Foot back to power. Why Shredder hasn't given her a leadership role is beyond me, but maybe that is leaving room to bring in another character from the Turtles canon.
The Krang reveal to Baxter happens, and we get to see Raph fight Casey's dad. It will be interesting to see exactly how this issue's cliffhanger gets resolved.
Damn, is it time to talk about that new artist yet?
What I Didn't Like
Granddaughter. Karai is supposed to be Shredder's granddaughter? Here I thought that the Turtles were from far longer in history than enough for them to be have been alive within the last century. That brings into question the whole re-incarnated thing they have going, and I don't like that too much. Will have to go to my previous issues to determine that. Then again, for all I know Shredder is lying about who he is, but then why would he do that?
Now it is time to talk about that new artist. All the turtles look Asian. By that I mean that they have squinted eyes and show their teeth with a smile. And they have no foreheads, which is vastly different from the previous artist. Layouts are similar to the look of the book that has been around since the first issue. Nothing too splashy.
It really isn't terrible. Look at Raph at the end of the book. He has an angry face and it works great. His body is thick and stocky though, and it doesn't have the sense that it would move as fluid as a ninja would. All the Turtles are like that, and it just throws me out of it. And everything has some thick inks and shading to it. I'm not trying to look for holes, but there was a strong, consistent style that the first 12 issues had that made seeing the Turtles in the Micro-Series ok since they were only "guest artists" more or less to the story. But there were some good guest artists. If this is the main book, I'm surprised that this artist was chosen. If this will be the consistent look of the Turtles, I may just be looking forward to the Micro-Series more.
Panel to Remember
The one were the Turtles were all gathered around Casey. I may not be a big fan of the new artist, but that one panel showed four different emotions that reflected exactly how each Turtle would react to this site. That was nicely done, and a kudos for putting the comic boxes in the background.
Quotable
"Did I whisper, granddaughter?" The words that launched me towards my long boxes in search of an answer.

Buy Next Issue: I will be back for the next issue. Maybe I just need to see more of where the art can go to enjoy it, but the story is what is keeping me along for the ride.
