Why I Bought It
So this is essentially the end of the first year of Azzarello on Wonder Woman. Hell, I've stuck around on a Wonder Woman title for a whole year. That does say something.
What I Liked
This is a conclusion to a story that really didn't have much fighting done in it. I took a look, and Wonder Woman threatens to fight a lot, but this is more about confrontation that a full issue of throw downs. It made me feel like there was a conclusion, but not much blood was spilled due to it.
I really do like Cliff Chiang's art. I like that he was able to come back to tell the ending. Just flipping through the book tells me about the story with clear expressions on a character's face.
I also like the fact that after the Zero issue, I will be done with Wonder Woman.
What I Didn't Like
Azzarello's dialogue is just getting to me, and I need a break. Everyone is so clever and witty and speaks very minimally. I feel like all the characters are just dancing on a chess board and as they pass they make witty comments out of the side of their mouths.
And really, Apollo didn't think about the baby in his master plan for the throne? Really? Its just like Diana trusting a god of thieves. How could you not see that coming?
Now the revelation that Wonder Woman has the powers of a god when the cuffs are off is an interesting concept. But you have to assume that she uses them only to keep herself in check for some reason. And why weren't they taken off before now? How come she didn't glow in the first issue when she was in bed? Like I said, I don't mind these new powers, it is more on how they came to be and then putting that into the larger perspective of the DCU. Hell, even if you keep it within her own book, it just doesn't make sense in some regard.
Let's look at that ending. We get the reveal about who really was pulling Hermes strings, but for what reason? If there is a logical reason, I would like to see it, but I just can't fathom it right now.
And then the very end. One, I'm not a fan of New Gods. Two, if I was a new reader to the new 52 and saw this, the ending just fell very flat for me. I would assume it is Zeus returning, but why the helmet and why the boom?
This series really started out strong for me, and Azzarello's name kept me going on it. But I think I've had my fill and I'm stepping away.
Panel to Remember
Right before Diana kicks some ass, she gives a look to Zola that is just filled with smarminess. Saturated with it.
Quotable
"B-Shu" - apparently the way to get the word "Bullshit!" past the DC Powers That Be.
