Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro Series: Donatello

Story by Brian Lynch
Script by Brian Lynch & Tom Waltz

The Solicitation
The "brains" of the Turtles steps out on his own in this unique tale! Intrigued by a cutting-edge science fair, Donatello goes incognito in public to get his fill of the latest tech. Little does he know that the fair is hosted by none other than Baxter Stockman -- and he's holding a competition to see who can create the best gizmo to find the Turtles first! It's up to Don to out-geek the geeks, all while keeping his cover! Don't miss this awesome, fun-filled adventure!

The Story
The comic follows the adventures of Donatello, the nerdy, science guy from the Turtles. We see that he hangs out on the internet and has developed an enemy of sorts on the net. Don's screen name of Duz_machines_84 is awesome. I like the nod to Kirby in his enemies' screen name of Kirby_fan01.

That stealthy Turtle disguise, the trench coat, makes its appearance here again. Don wears it to go to the Science expo hosted by Baxter Stockman. There we get to meet Harold, a guy that Baxter decides to offer a job to. Donatello happens to be listening to this conversation and overhears that Baxter wants some help in finding mutated turtle blood. Don unwittingly enters the picture and fighting ensues.

During the fight, Don and Harold realize each other's screen names. and so Harold attacks Don. This continues until Harold's machines that he is using to fight Don run out of energy. It appears that the machine run off the power of the person who is holding them and Harold is worn out. Harold and Don talk it out, and Harold gives Don the machine so it could run on Turtle power. They both escape together, with Harold yelling at Don because now Harold has to change everything about his identity, including his screen name.

Don then goes home feeling pretty defeated. He decides to jump online and play some MMORPG and gets requested to be a friend by what you would assume is Harold's new screen name (its a running joke in the comic, just read it for yourself!).

This comic was 22 pages, but it felt like a lot more. This comic was packed with words and story and art that just sung beautifully off the page. I remember thinking the whole time if there was more story to go because there has been so much already.

The Art
I loved this art. It fit in perfectly with the story and I am so glad that this artist was picked for this book. There was no wasted space anywhere in any panel. The art worked very well with the story and I would highly suggest giving this to a new comics reader who is hesitant because they have heard about bad experiences with artists that make everyone look like superheroes. There is a realism here with the art but enough cartoon-y kind of style that just fits in perfect.

I would dare say that if anything happened to the regular series artist, then Schiti would be an excellent backup. More so than the artist who did the Michaelangelo mini.

The Cover
I got the colored version of Donatello walking through the sewers. While this cover serves well in looking like the rest of the micro-series covers so far, I would have much rather enjoyed the regular artist's cover. I liked the excellent use of the lighting source to bring out the cover.

Grades
Words: 10/10
Pictures: 10/10
Recommend: Highly. This takes time to focus on Donatello very well, and I would even give this comic to anyone with a passing knowledge of the Turtles and they would enjoy it.
Buy Next Issue: Leonardo's mini is next. I still have to find a copy of the Raphael one. Hopefully I can track down the Raph one, but I am all in for the Leo one.
